History

STEPS was first conceived and put into operation in January of 1988, and run by a three man committee.

In it’s original form, STEPS was limited to the distribution of funds on hand at the end of a “manual” collection process.   Volunteer members struggled to maintain the schedule of collections and distributions with a significant number of members contributing an inordinate amount of time every month to make the system work.

In the summer of 1993, a decision was made to re-organize and adopt a automated collection system that was devised by the leadership of The Local Federal Credit Union at the request of STEPS committee members, with a single STEPS Administrator responsible for managing and operating the fund.  At that point the name of the organizaton was changed from “Drivers Assisting Drivers” to STEPS.

The system that was put in place in 1993 is still in operation today, and with a few minor tweaks, has served the membership well.  The monthly transfer, or contribution collection system that is provided by The Local Federal Credit Union is a FREE service for all the members of the STEPS program who choose to and can be members of the credit union.

STEPS encourages membership in The Local Federal Credit Union, which benefits STEPS and the entire STEPS membership with its free automated collection system by keeping costs low, and at the same time, assists the credit union with their own recruiting goals.

A new method of Automated Contribution collection has been added to STEPS Membership Options as of January, 2012.  The new collection system is available for those who can not, or choose not to become members of The Local Federal Credit Union, and involves the online establishment of a monthly recurring STEPS contribution through PayPal which does charge a small fee for each transaction.

The Founder and Administrator since the inception of STEPS has been Bill Reid, a former feeder driver from the Mesquite Hub. Now Retired, Bill serves as co-administrator and a volunteer consultant to the current administrator, Charles Boddie, a feeder driver out of the Longview Center, and will do so as long as possible.   The administration of the STEPS system is not an easy task which involves a considerable amount of time and effort.
